Internal Stress – in mechanics – is a physical quantity, which expresses the internal forces neighboring particles of a continuous material exert on each other. When a certain stress-level is arrived at through continuous exposure to mechanical stress, a material reaches its breaking point. Internal Stress, a new series of photographs by Qiu Yang, portray different kinds of Chinese produced plastics, focusing on the visualization of their stress-level. While plastic remains one of China’s biggest export commodities, and still can be found in all sorts of products around the world, Yang renders this material as a symbol of contemporary China – a high pressure state, concealing signs of social and economical stress. Yang’s scientific approach to making the imagery is perhaps mantled by the seamless color gradients we see, poetically scratching at our socio-political consciousness.
